Gill left a busy job in sales to seek a more flexible work / life balance and set up a Direct Selling business with MeAmora in 2022, selling beauty products. She and partner Mark now divide their time between their home in Spain (just south of Granada) and the UK. In 2024, Gill’s business became a lifeline for the couple after Mark had a stroke. The flexibility of her Direct Selling work allowed Gill to continue to earn whilst supporting Mark’s recovery, and she now earns around £1,000 per month through her MeAmora business.
“I started out in direct sales at the age of 27, and one of my early roles was as a franchise area manager with The Body Shop, followed by a time as Regional Manager with the then Virgin-owned cosmetics brand Virgin Vie at Home. I loved my work, and it gave me an introduction to direct selling from within some of the biggest businesses in the industry at the time.
Over the next 25 years, my career flourished, and promotions followed, but I was gradually finding myself spending more and more time travelling, and I found the work increasingly stressful. I was keen to get a better work / life balance, and decided it was time for a change.
I was of course already familiar with direct selling, and in 2022 a friend told me about a new beauty brand called MeAmora that was starting up in the UK, selling purely direct-to-consumer, so I decided I’d set up my own direct selling business with them.
I think it’s fair to say that I’ve not looked back! It took hard work and effort to get things started, but I’ve nurtured and developed a strong customer base, and many of my customers now eagerly await my updates sharing new product launches such as new nail designs.
One of the best things about my work is that it fits around life – if I want to catch up with a friend over a coffee on a Tuesday afternoon I can – I just start a bit earlier if I need to in order to get the work done or work a little later.
Mark and I now divide our time between the UK and our rural home just south of Granada in Spain. Thanks to digital and social technology, MeAmora offers me the flexibility of running a business wherever I am in the world. I began to build my business right from the start through Facebook and WhatsApp, holding online ‘pop up’ parties and so on, and my customers love showing off their new nails or lashes in my WhatsApp groups. I’ve had to learn a lot and have invested in developing my digital and social skills with support from digital marketing experts, but I managed to increase my knowledge, which in turn has helped my business grow.
I now earn £1,000+ in a typical month, but around Christmas it can be as much as £3,000 as people tend to have more nights out and celebrations that they want to look good for.
I always knew the flexibility of working in direct selling was a real bonus, and my earnings started out as our ‘fun fund’ – paying for meals out and weekends away. But in 2024, my business became a lifeline when Mark had a stroke. It was an incredibly challenging time, and of course Mark – understandably – needed me like never before, but I also wanted to maintain an income and something for me.
Thankfully, I was able to keep working for a few hours a day, fitting my business activities around looking after Mark and taking him to hospital appointments. We laugh about the fact that I even managed to make a sale in a hospital waiting room during one of Mark’s check-ups after someone asked me where I’d got my nails done! I also found that putting on my lashes and my nails made me feel good, even during my darkest days.
I recently turned 60, but I’ve no plans whatsoever to give up my direct selling business, in fact my plan is to build it even further – I am a passionate champion for women being financially empowered, and my work adds to my life rather than detracting from it – it’s really sociable!”
